Gillam (pictured),
24, joins from NPL Premier Division side Atherton Collieries.
He
had joined Colls in August 2021 from then-Vanarama National League North side
Guiseley AFC.
He
had signed for the Lions following a recommendation by his former Rochdale
team-mate, goalkeeper Brad Wade.
The
young keeper, who was on loan at Guiseley in 2019/20, recommended the club to
the forward when he was released by Rochdale in the summer of 2020.
Born
in Kent, he moved when just a few months old with his family to Congleton in
Cheshire, which remains his home base.
He
started playing football with a local junior club aged 7 and was quickly
scouted by Port Vale and signed up to their academy system.
At
the age of 12 scouts came calling from Manchester City and he went there for
three months before joining the Stoke City academy.
Stoke
did not offer him a scholarship at 16 so he moved on to join Rochdale on a
scholarship.
Whilst
at Rochdale he had loan spells at Stalybridge Celtic and at Irish club Cork
City - the latter seeing him injured in the warm-up to what should have been
his first senior game.
When
he returned to Cork a new manager came in and all the loan signings were sent
back to their parent clubs.
He
went on to make 20 first-team appearances for Rochdale, scoring 2 goals.
Glossop
manager Stuart Mellish told the club’s website: “I'm delighted to bring Matty
to the football club, he has tasted league football and scored goals at that
level with Rochdale.
“Like
a lot of young players, they don’t get time to fulfil their potential, having
gained non-League experience with Guiseley and Atherton Colls.
“He’s
now ready to kick on his career and having spoken at length with him a few
weeks ago he’s bought into what we are trying to achieve and agreed to to join
Glossop.”
Glossop’s
second new signing of the summer is former Carlisle United goalkeeper Bacon.
Bacon
saved a penalty against Glossop last season playing for Kendal Town.
He
has also featured for Marine AFC, Shaw Lane AFC, Ramsbottom United and
Wythenshawe Town.
Mellish
added: “Morgan has always been on the radar following his two outstanding
performances against us last year including the penalty save on the opening day
of last season.
“He’s
been outstanding for Wythenshawe Town, narrowing missing out on promotion and reaching
the semi-final of the FA Vase. He fits exactly the profile I was wanting,
experienced at this level at the right age, with outstanding distribution”. |
