The 25-year-old rejected an offer to stay with the Hatters` former Vanarama National League rivals Notts County to move to Edgeley Park.

Wootton turned his loan spell with the Magpies into a permanent signing from then-League One side Scunthorpe United in early January 2020.

He had been a big hit at Meadow Lane after joining on loan in late August and led the Magpies scoring charts with 12 goals in all competitions before his permanent switch.

He came through the youth system at Glanford Park and made his professional debut in August 2014, aged just 17.

He made a further 13 appearances that season and scored his first senior goal in April 2015.

He has had loan spells with Cheltenham Town and Stevenage in League Two, and at Lincoln City, North Ferriby United and FC Halifax Town in the National League.
