He arrived at the Jakemans Stadium from League Two side Doncaster Rovers, where he also enjoyed a spell as interim manager during the second half of the 2020/21 campaign following Darren Moore's departure to Sheffield Wednesday.

Doncaster-born, he made more than 500 senior appearances during his time as a professional footballer.

He signed for the Rovers in January 2015 after making his loan move from Sheffield United permanent.

A former Scunthorpe United academy product, he made the grade at Glanford Park and would go on to make more than 150 appearances for the Iron.

From there, he moved to Huddersfield Town, Walsall and the Blades before heading back to his place of birth.

Butler has also taken the step into coaching in recent years, with spells at Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough United before he became the manager of Doncaster Rovers Belles - a role he will continue to hold alongside his playing duties.
