The Pilgrims have clinched the signature of striker Kelsey Mooney from former National League North rivals Leamington. The 24-year-old former Aston Villa trainee has put pen-to-paper at the Jakemans Community Stadium to become Ian Culverhouse's first addition of the close season. Mooney had been with the Brakes since August 2021. He began his career at Aston Villa and was a regular scorer at Premier League under-18 and under-23 level for the Birmingham outfit, where he spent 12 years coming up through the ranks. He turned professional at Villa in February 2017 and got his first taste of senior football in a loan spell at then-League Two side Cheltenham Town, quickly scoring his first goal. He has previous experience of the National League North having spent two spells at Hereford, first joining the Bulls in October 2019 and impressing enough for Scunthorpe United to sign him in August 2020. He spent another short spell on loan back at Hereford before he made the move to Leamington after he left Scunthorpe. Experienced midfielder Martin Woods (pictured) has also put pen-to-paper for the Pilgrims. The 37-year-old has linked up with the Pilgrims after spending the majority of the 2022/23 campaign with beaten promotion finalists Brackley Town – culminating in assisting caretaker manager Gareth Dean towards the end of the season. He had signed for the Saints in October 2022 from National League side FC Halifax Town, where he had been since August 2020. He started his career at Leeds United coming through their academy and he was capped by Scotland Youth making appearances at under-17, 19 and under-21 levels. He made one substitute appearance and he had a loan spell with Hartlepool United whilst at Elland Road. He gained Premier League experience joining Sunderland, making 7 appearances, before having spells with Rotherham United, Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley. He moved back north of the border, joining Ross County for two spells with a couple of months at Shrewsbury Town in between. He was part of the Partick Thistle side which was relegated through the play-offs at the end of the 2017/18 season before joining Dundee in November 2018 until the end of the season. Boston’s third summer signing is defender Brad Nicholson, although in his case, it isn’t a `new` arrival. The 24-year-old made 13 appearances for the Pilgrims during the closing weeks of the 2021/22 campaign but sustained a serious ACL injury in United's final home game of the season against Gloucester City. Nicholson subsequently missed the final day clincher at Farsley Celtic – and the play-off fixtures at Kidderminster Harriers, AFC Fylde and York City – and underwent successful surgery during the summer of 2022. He is now fit-again and available to report for pre-season training when the Pilgrims reconvene at the beginning of July.
