Striker Coup for Matlock
Martin Carruthers, manager of Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division club Matlock Town, has pulled off something of a coup by signing prolific marksman Jonny Margetts from Southern League Premier Division Central newcomers Stamford AFC.

The 29-year-old Doncaster-based striker played a major part in Stamford winning the NPL Division One Midlands title last season. It will be Margetts’ second spell at Matlock, the first being a loan signing from Boston United in January 2019 when he netted 4 goals in 5 matches in a side which was then struggling for consistency. Margetts scored a mammoth 36 goals for the Daniels last term - 33 of them in league matches to finish as the division’s leading scorer. He joined the Daniels in January 2021 from then-league rivals Belper Town. He had moved to the Nailers in June 2021 from Frickley Athletic, where he had been since September 2019 after arriving from Tadcaster Albion, where he had only been for just over a month after leaving National League North side Boston United. He joined the Pilgrims from Scunthorpe United in July 2018. He had spent close to two seasons at Glanford Park following an August 2016 deadline day move from Lincoln City, where he had opened the 2016/17 campaign with 5 goals in 10 appearances. He began his career at Hull City and excelled during various loan spells at the likes of Gainsborough Trinity, Stockport County, Altrincham and Tranmere Rovers. He spent time on loan back at Gainsborough as well as having two stints with Matlock in 2018/19. Carruthers told https://www.matlocktownfc.co.uk: “I’m absolutely delighted to get Jon’s signing over the line, it’s a real statement of intent from the club. To get a goalscorer in of this calibre shows the ambition we have here at Matlock . We had to be patient but everything’s fallen in nicely for us, it’s no secret that a regular goalscorer is something we lacked this season. It’s really exciting now with Reece Styche and Karl Demidh in there as well”.
