The 24-year-old began his career at Manchester United and spent a total of 12 years at Old Trafford, which included a brief loan spell with Port Vale.
After departing the Red Devils in 2019, Whelan signed for Watford and made his senior debut as a substitute in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup in January 2020.
The midfielder was snapped up by Oldham Athletic following a short trial period in August 2020 and went on to make over 70 appearances for the Latics.
In July 2022, he moved to Solihull and played 21 times before joining The Heed on loan in February 2023, making 13 appearances.
