...Northern League First Division side Whitley Bay for an undisclosed fee.

The right-back, who is also capable of playing at centre-half, joins the Seasiders after seeking a move to a higher level.

Nearney will be a familiar name to some Whitby fans following a loan spell from then-League Two side Hartlepool United in October 2015.

He signed professional terms with Pools in the summer of 2014, initially joining as an under-16 after leaving Middlesbrough, and he became a regular in the reserve team where he played both at centre-back and right-back.

A graduate of the famed Wallsend Boys Club, Nearney spent time on loan with Whitley Bay in 2016/17 before a permanent move to Hillhead Park in August last year.

The defender could go into the squad for the visit of Hednesford Town this weekend, and will not be cup tied, so is eligible to face his former club in the Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round tie at Hillheads Park on September 8th.
