Newton Aycliffe are still alive in the Buildbase FA Vase after a goal deep into stoppage time earned them a 2-2 draw at Ebac Northern League First Division rivals Bishop Auckland in the First Qualifying Round on Saturday.

Aycliffe were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup partly thanks to a goal by the Guisborough Town keeper deep into stoppage time, so there was a heavy touch of irony when Daniel Kent was on target, and that was enough to give them something to hang on to in extra-time for a replay on Tuesday night.

Newton Aycliffe manager Deano Browne said; “I thought that Bishop were the better side if I’m honest, but we defended well and stayed in the game. We missed some big chances at crucial times. We showed great character to come from behind twice and to score a last-minute equaliser was a great feeling after the torture of the FA Cup. We’re looking forward to the replay and hope we can get the neutral fans from the area to come and support us.”

Bishops had the better of the first half, the best chance falling to Michael Hoganson who struck the bar. But they took the lead just after the hour-mark, when Callum Patton spotted Aycliffe keeper James Winter off his line, and coolly struck the ball over him from long distance.

But Aycliffe levelled through former Bishop player Ian Ward, who beat Nick Liversedge from the edge of the box.

Bishops were quickly ahead again with a great shot by Callum Patton, but they couldn’t finish Aycliffe off, and in the fifth minute of stoppage time at the end of normal time Kent forced the ball home.

Bishop Auckland manager Ian Chandler said; “It was a very, very frustrating day. We dominated throughout, their keeper made numerous great saves, but we were extremely profligate and should have been out of sight. However, this is football and these things happen. We’re looking forward to replay on Tuesday.”

Willington had a good 2-2 away draw at Northallerton Town after extra-time to set up a replay on Wednesday.

Mattie Moffat scored from a cross by new signing Dean Thexton to put Willington ahead, but Northallerton scored twice within 6 minutes through Nicky Martin and Chris Dickinson to go in the lead. However, Connor Winter levelled from a Moffat assist to force extra-time.

Northallerton manager Darren Trotter said; “It was a game of two halves. In the first, we never got going and deserved to be at least one down. In the second, we were much more positive, took the lead and did enough to win comfortably. “Unfortunately, we have to work hard again on Wednesday against a good side. We need to have the right attitude from the start.”

Chester-le-Street’s winning start to the season came to an end when they lost 5-1 at home to Sunderland Ryhope CW.

Jack Oliver was on target for Chester when they were already 4-0 down, and manager Colin Wake said; “We were heavily punished by an accomplished first division side with good forwards who hit the target when they got a chance. We were guilty of standing off renowned forwards in our box and conceded poor goals defensively. The young lads in the team stuck at the task as Ryhope dropped off the pace and never gave up, but the difference in quality was quite evident. It was a hard lesson for some of them.”

Esh Winning were easily beaten 6-0 at home by four times winners Whitley Bay, and manager Tony Boakes said; “It was one of those days. We hit the crossbar and post before the officials got involved. The second half, we were well beaten but having to chase the game.”

It could have been different if an effort by Esh debutant Luke Wilson had gone in instead of hitting the post early in the game.

Durham City have still only scored once this season after they were beaten 5-0 at home to Seaham Red Star, for whom Vinny Gash scored a hat-trick.

Durham manager Mike Weston said; “We were good in places, but didn't react to the second ball, we go again on Tuesday.”

Darlington RA never really got going in their tie against Bedlington Terriers at Brinkburn Road and were easily beaten 5-0.

Guisborough were the day’s top scorers, winning 9-0 at Stokesley.

Both Billingham teams went through, Synners by beating Toolstation Northern Counties East Leaguers Knaresborough Town 3-1 and Town by beating another, Campion, 2-0.

Two other NL v NCEL ties saw Thornaby go down 3-2 at Thackley, but Hebburn Town won 1-0 at Eccleshill United.

Consett had a good 2-1 away win at previous winners North Shields, and Dunston UTS, another former winner, beat Heaton Stannington 2-0.

In the all-Uhlsport Hellenic League ties, Premier Division Ardley United played hosts to Division One East Holyport at the Nolan Oils Ground.

Ardley scored after 2 minutes but ‘Port struck back with four, Fabien Driffil netting three.

Division One West Tytherington Rocks parted company with their manager in midweek after a 13-0 battering last weekend. They travelled with forlorn hope to Barrington Park to counter Premier Division Shrivenham.

The game was dominated by a disciplined Shrivenham side, always looking like scoring and finished convincingly with a 9-0 result, including braces for Jamie Prictor, Lewis Petrie and Dan Drewett.

Division One East Wallingford Town took on Premier Division Abingdon United at the Wallingford Sports Club and were beaten 4-1.

Another One East side, Milton United, pitted their skills against One West Clanfield 85 at The Heights, but went out of the competition with no answer to the Robin’s three goals, scored by Jozef Fullerton with two and Callum Miller.

Lydney Town lost 3-1 against another Combined Counties team, Premier Division Abbey Rangers, at the Lydney Recreation Ground.

The game was delayed after Abbey coach in traffic jam on M4, finally kicking-off at 3.50pm.

Combined Counties Premier Division side Southall won 3-2 against their Hellenic League counterparts Reading City at Reynolds Field.

Southall`s rivals Chertsey Town won 4-2 against Woodley United.

Tadley Calleva, occupying fourth place in the Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Premier Division, hosted Premier Division fourth-placed side Ascot United at Barlows Park.

Wembley dreams dashed for the Yellamen at the first hurdle losing to Wessex League opposition in an FA competition for the second successive weekend after Tadley Calleva beat them 3-1, with Brett Denham bagging a late brace.

Fairford Town were hosts to Baffins Milton Rovers of the Wessex League Premier Division at Cinder Lane Stadium.

It was 2-2 at full-time with the decisive goal arriving deep into extra-time - Robbie Tan scoring two for the visitors.

Division One East Penn & Tylers Green played Wessex Division One AFC Stoneham.

Penn scored first, but Stoneham hit back with three, including a brace for Alex Welsh.

Pewsey Vale took to the “high seas” with a journey to Wessex Division One club East Cowes Victoria on the Isle of Wight.

It was a good game for the spectators with lots of goals, Vale went in at half-time with a two-goal lead, the second half The Vic’s hit four to Vale’s one.

Jimmi Burton`s hat-trick for Cowes proving decisive.

Wessex Division One Whitchurch United took on Hellenic League new boys Almondsbury, and the Almond’s scored a goal in each half without conceding through Matthew Baker and Alex Bisp.

Holmer Green lost 3-1 away to Greek Orthodox Church side St Panteleimon of the Middlesex County League Premier Division.

Ten Toolstation Northern Counties East League sides progressed to the next stage.

Swallownest were one of five Division One teams to win their First Round Qualifying ties on Saturday as they won 1-0 at home to a side one step above them in the National League System, Abbey Hey of the Hallmark Security League, Tom Cropper netting the only goal of the game in the 34th minute.

Three goals for Parkgate in extra-time gave them a 5-2 victory at Green Lane over Hallmark Security League Division One North visitors Chadderton, Andy Fox completing his hat-trick with two of them in an eventful match that saw both sides reduced to ten men.

Two goals each from Jordan Smith and Will Britton saw Skegness Town beat Central Midlands League visitors Clay Cross Town 4-1 at the Vertigo Stadium, whilst a Conor Higginson penalty was the winner in Ollerton Town's 1-0 home victory over NWCL side New Mills.

And, Worsbrough Bridge Athletic prevailed in the only all-NCEL Division One tie as Jack Wilson and Fidel Mhlolo's strikes either side of the interval gave them a 2-1 win at Armthorpe Welfare, Jason Kearsley scoring a 79th minute consolation for the hosts.

Of the five Premier Division victors, two of them beat Division One opposition with a brace for Jahmal Riley and Joe Pugh helping Staveley Miners Welfare to a 5-0 defeat of home side Selby Town and Worksop Town saw off visitors Grimsby Borough 2-1.

Matt Sykes' early strike for the Tigers was added to in the 51st minute by Steven Woolley before Boro got themselves back into the tie through Adam Drury on the hour-mark.

The other three top flight sides who progressed all did so on their own turf with Maltby Main securing the most convincing scoreline as a Danny Frost double set them on their way to a 5-1 victory over Ashton Athletic.

Luke Robinson also scored twice in Thackley's 3-2 defeat of Ebac Northern Leaguers Thornaby and Barton Town went through 3-1 over NWCL AFC Liverpool with Tom Bennett, Will Waudby and Josh Tennant finding the net for the Swans.

There will be one midweek replay after 120 minutes could not separate Bottesford Town or Midland League hosts Leicester Road, Craig Bridge's 22nd minute penalty levelling things for the Poachers in a game that finished 1-1 and they will play again on Wednesday evening.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment at home for Eccleshill United, Goole AFC and Harrogate Railway Athletic to follow on from a Friday night exit for AFC Emley on their own patch.

And, those who went out on their travels to non-NCEL opposition were Athersley Recreation, Campion, Harworth Colliery, Knaresborough Town, Liversedge, Nostell Miners Welfare, Penistone Church and Yorkshire Amateur.

A good day in the Vase for team in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division as seven of the ten sides won through, with the only three losing all doing so in all-Premier Division affairs.

Two sides had wins over Step 5 Toolstation Western League Premier Division outfits with Newquay winning 2-1 after extra-time away at Hengrove Athletic and Saltash United winning 3-1 away at Wellington but in a tie staged at Cullompton Rangers` Speeds Meadow ground.

Godolphin Atlantic had a 1-0 win at home to Portishead of the Western League Division One, whilst St Austell had a 3-1 win over SWP East Division side Ilfracombe Town at Marlborough Park.

The three all-Premier ties saw Tavistock beat Helston Athletic 3-1 at Langsford Park, it was also 3-1 at Haye Road where Elburton Villa saw off visiting Launceston and at Southern Road, Exmouth Town went one better with a 4-1 victory over Callington Town.

Twelve Southern Counties East League sides advanced to join Beckenham Town, Crowborough Athletic, Chatham Town, Deal Town, Bridon Ropes and Forest Hill Park who were fortunate not to have to play in this round.

Corinthian and Fisher will replay on Tuesday night after a 4-4 draw.

Kent Football, Lewisham Borough and Stansfeld lost out after extra-time following draws in their games at 90 minutes.

The day’s `shocks` for Spartan South Midlands League sides came at Broadfields United (Step 6) defeating United Counties League Premier Division – and previously unbeaten - Daventry Town by an emphatic 5-0 scoreline.

Cricklewood Wanderers (Step 7) beat Risborough Rangers (Step 6), FC Deportivo Galicia beating London Tigers and Langford knocking out Tower Hamlets.

Plenty of drama at UCL Rushden & Higham United where visiting Winslow United progressed 5-4 after extra-time.

Stotfold and Wembley were obviously glad of a break from league football, both clubs having lost all five league games to date enjoyed cup success against Wadham Lodge and AFC Hayes respectively.

The three all-SSML ties each saw the Premier Division team come out on top although in the case of London Colney and Cockfosters it was an all-Premier Division affair.

Twenty-seven ties involving Hallmark Security League clubs offered a fascinating bill of fare at the weekend.

It was a generally good weekend for our league in the Vase, with twelve clubs progressing at the expense of opponents from other leagues, eight going out, and fourteen clubs were whittled down to seven after meeting fellow league members.

Starting with the latter games, there was one all-Premier Division clash, and in a repeat of the league game five days earlier, Bootle gained revenge for their league defeat with a 2-1 win at Congleton Town, coming from behind to win with second half goals from Andrew Gillespie and Antony Hickey

Lower Breck delivered the surprise result of the day with a 3-1 home win over Premier Division West Didsbury & Chorlton, Peter Donnelly scoring twice, and Simon Everall went one better for Whitchurch Alport at Abbey Hulton United, with all three goals in his side's 3-2 win.

There were doubles for Ashton Town's Dylan Glass in the 3-1 win at home to St Helens Town, and also for Burscough's Jordan Lorde in their 5-1 defeat of Alsager Town at Victoria Park.

Prestwich Heys won 2-0 at Holker Old Boys, Vauxhall Motors beat Longridge Town 3-1 in the only First Division North v First Division South encounter.

Out of the twelve clubs who knocked out opponents from other leagues, six achieved the feat on home soil while the same number won on the road.

The biggest away winners were Hanley Town, for whom Leigh Skellern scored twice in the 4-0 win at Pershore Town, and Silsden also scored four in a ding-dong contest at Harrogate Railway Athletic, with two goals in the final quarter from Lee Spires sealing a 4-3 win for the Cobbydalers.

Zack Dale's double saw Barnoldswick Town through to a 2-1 win at Goole AFC, and a Jack Tomlinson winner eight minutes from the end of extra time ensured Stone Old Alleynians progressed to the next round with a 2-1 win at Gornal Athletic.

Two clubs struck with winners in the 90th minute to ensure their progress, with Charnock Richard's Carl Grimshaw doing the needful to earn his side a 2-1 win at Alnwick Town and AFC Emley hearts were broken by a last gasp Litherland REMYCA goal from Declan Gregson, that delivered a 4-3 win for Remy on Friday.

Sandbach United posted the biggest home winning margin, 5-1 against Athersley Recreation with Kieran Garner-Knapper and James Kirby both scoring twice, and five different scorers made the Daisy Hill scoresheet in their 5-2 win at New Sirs over Whitehaven of the West Lancashire League.

Israel Johnson and Daniel Keane will go down in the Shelley history books as the players to score in the club's first ever appearance in the Vase that saw them win 2-1 at home to Penistone Church, and a late revival on the Wirral saw Cammell Laird 1907 snatch a 2-1 win over Harworth Colliery, thanks to goals in the last six minutes from Colm Lynch (a penalty) and Andrew Scarisbrick.

Ben Duffield scored twice for AFC Blackpool in the 3-1 win over Nostell Miners Welfare at the Mechanics Ground,  and Winsford United needed extra time to edge a 2-1 win over Liversedge at the St Luke's Barton Stadium, Peter Watling scoring the all-important goal in the 104th minute.

For eight other clubs, opponents from other leagues ended their interest in the Vase for another season, although in the case of Chadderton and Eccleshall, extra time was needed to eliminate them.

Chadderton lost 5-2 at Parkgate after the sides were tied at 2-2 after 90 minutes, and there was plenty of goal entertainment available at Copsewood Sports and Social Club, where Coventry Copsewood eventually beat Eccleshall 6-3 after the teams were level at 3-3 after 90 minutes.

A late revival from St Martins at Wellington wasn't enough as the Saints went down 3-2, and in the other tie in Shropshire Ellesmere Rangers lost 4-0 at home to Birstall United.

Ashton Athletic never recovered from going three down inside 18 minutes at Maltby Main, eventually losing 5-1, and a long trip to Lincolnshire proved to be without reward for AFC Liverpool, who lost 3-1 at Barton Town.

There were 1-0 defeats for New Mills at Ollerton Town, and for Abbey Hey at Swallownest.

Essex Senior League rivals Clapton and Woodford Town went all the way to extra-time, but their game ended 1-1 at the end and so they have to go again in midweek.

Clapton scored through Steve Sardinia, with Temi Babalola notching for Woodford Town.

Stanway Rovers and White Ensign will also have to go again after their game was abandoned due to a player receiving a bad injury.

Tower Hamlets found themselves two-goals down at Langford as Luke Smith and Jack Worbey put the hosts in a commanding lead.

Lindisipho Mtyanda and Michael Adeste then scored for Hamlets which levelled the game, but having clawed their way back into the game, the hosts then socred again through James Todd to win the game 3-2.

Leyton Athletic were brushed aside by Stotfold who won the game 4-0.

Ilford also crash out, despite taking the lead against Haverhill Rovers.

The Foxes had been under the cosh for most of the first half but took the lead three minutes into the second half when Yemi Adelani pounched on a defensive error.

Mark Lovell then levelled for the hosts in the 54th minute before Sam Holmes rifled home the winner in the 82nd minute to see Haverhill Rovers through.

Stansted also fell at the first hurdle as Jordan Palmer’s goal was cancelled out by Sam Newson’s brace, with George Clarke the other Brantham Athletic scorer in the 3-1 win.

First half goals from Mohamed Kargbo and Nathan Dewberry meant Southend Manor went in at the break with one foot very much in the next round.

There was to be no way back for Ipswich Wanderers with Charlie Little going on to add Manor’s third goal of the afternoon 5 minutes from time.

Halstead Town were thumped 6-0 at Enfield Borough, while May & Baker made it a dream Vase debut as their first ever game in the competition saw them beat Burnham Ramblers 8-1.

Dean Hall opened the account in the 16th minute, and by half-time Reece Tranter and Dan Gilchrist had both rifled home braces to put the hosts 5-0 up.

Jack Davies pulled one back for Ramblers in the 65th minute, but Gilchrist completed his hat-trick 6 minutes later, added a fourth 5 minutes after that, before Kiel Chandler then fired home the final goal in the 82nd minute.

Holland move on after beating Cornard United 4-2, Newbury Forest ended Wivenhoe Town’s interest as they beat them 2-1 at Oakside, while Fire United travelled to Lordswood and were sent packing with a 2-0 defeat.

The final Vase game of the weekend was on Sunday when St Margaretsbury crashed out at the hands of Hadleigh United who came away with a handy 3-0 win.
