In front of a crowd of 1,814, FC United with Dave Chadwick in caretaker charge following the departure of player boss Tom Greaves in midweek, were put under pressure early on by in-form Avenue.
And the visitors were rewarded by their bright start by taking a 22nd minute lead when a low cross was tapped home at the far post by skipper Shane Killock.
Avenue came close to adding to their lead just before the break when an effort from distance from Nicky Wroe hit the post.
Bradford did extend their lead 10 minutes into the second half when Jake Beesley put pressure on FC United defender Joel Senior, who poked the ball past his own keeper.
But 7 minutes later, the home side were back in the game when Brodie Litchfield reacted quickest when the ball rebounded off a post and netted from close range.
And just when it seemed that defeat number six from seven games was on the cards, FC United grabbed a stoppage time equaliser with a penalty converted by Kurt Willoughby.
