Bolton-born Ashworth came through the ranks at Wigan Athletic, turning professional in 2008.

After a loan spell at Leyton Orient in 2008 where he made 3 appearances, he signed for the O`s on his release from Wigan in 2009.

After 10 appearances, he joined Rotherham United in 2010, making 9 appearances and in 2011 made the move into non-League football with Harrogate Town before moving to FC Halifax Town.

He saw out the season at Halifax, going on to make 13 appearances, and then joined Hyde United in 2012 for two seasons during which he played 72 times and scored twice.

After a loan spell at Chester FC in 2014, making 3 appearances, he left Hyde and joined up with FC United, being almost ever-present in their back-line over three seasons, totalling 98 appearances and scoring 9 goals.

He re-signed for FC United in the summer after a season with Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division Stalybridge Celtic.
