Neary, alongside his assistant Ray Harrison, leave the club after taking charge just over a year ago and is proud to be leaving the Memorial Field outfit in a better state than he found it.

Under Neary’s management last season, Downham finished ninth in the First Division and made the final of last season’s Norfolk Senior Cup at Carrow Road - their first appearance in final of Norfolk’s oldest County Cup since 1969.

“It is sad to be stepping down, but your family have to come first,” Neary told the Lynn News. “I'd like to think that Ray and I are leaving the club in a better place than when we came in and I have been really touched by people saying how far the club has come in the year we have been involved.

 “There are some very special memories which I am taking away with me. The final at Carrow Road was an incredible night for me, my family and everyone connected to Downham Town.

“We have gone from struggling towards the bottom of the Division to being able to go to places like Fakenham and win, it’s been a fantastic journey we have all been on.

"The lads' success on the pitch last season has allowed me to take on a new role as head of football at the UEA.

"I can't thank the players enough for the determination and commitment they gave to the club and me last term.

“It’s been a team effort and I want to thank Ray for all his support.

"I'm sure in the future we will back in the game again at some point but for now I am taking a break from football and focusing on my family and the new arrival.”

Downham’s players were made aware of Neary’s resignation on Friday night and the outgoing Town boss believes the new Memorial Field chief will inherit a side with real potential.

“Whoever comes in is inheriting a squad that is capable of pushing for promotion, I really do believe that," admitted Neary. “We have put together a great side, who have started the season strongly and I think everything is set up for a new manager to come in and continue to take the team forward.

“The lads have been terrific to work with and I want to thank the club for the opportunity they have given me and I wish them all the very best for the future”.
