....former team, National League South side Billericay Town, to bring in experienced midfielder Simon Walton on loan.
Walton was signed by Wheeler for the Essex outfit in June from National League side Sutton United.
An experienced central midfield-holding player, he is also comfortable in the centre-back role.
He has extensive experience having played at thirteen different League clubs and has been awarded the captaincy at most of his clubs.
By the age of 22, he had commanded cumulative transfer fees of £1.45million for his services.
Walton started his career at home-town club Leeds United, making his competitive debut in the Championship, aged 16, in August 2004.
After 38 appearances, mainly in his debut season, he moved on in June 2006 for a £500,000 fee to then-Premiership side Charlton Athletic.
He never made a competitive appearance for the Addicks being immediately loaned to Ipswich Town and, from January 2016, Cardiff City.
In July 2007, he switched to Championship side Queens Park Rangers, in a £200,000 transfer.
A broken leg would restrict him to just five appearances in West London and ten games at Hull City during a loan spell.
In August 2008, Plymouth Argyle broke their record transfer fee to acquire Walton from QPR for £750,000.
He made 66 appearances for the Pilgrims over four years including almost the 2009/10 season on loan at Crewe.
After a ten-point deduction for being placed into administration, Argyle were relegated to League Two for 2011/12. In what would be his final season at Home Park, he was an ever-present, club captain, and leading scorer (9 goals).
In July 2012, Walton signed for then-League One Hartlepool United, making 74 appearances in two years.
In June 2013, he moved to League Two Stevenage, scoring 5 goals from 33 outings.
After a single season at the Boro , he joined fellow League two side, Crawley Town, in June 2014, making 39 appearances and getting on the score-sheet four times.
Released by the Reds in May 2016, four months later he joined National League side Guiseley AFC, remaining for the rest of the season.
By June 2017, he had switched to spend 2017/18 at Gander Green Lane.
Commenting on the deal, Wheeler told http://www.maidstoneunited.co.uk: “I am excited to bring Simon to the club.
“Having worked with him at Billericay, I know the qualities he will bring to this side.
“He is immensely experienced and will bring more authority, maturity, knowhow and nous to the team.
“He has great experience having played for Leeds in the Championship, he has an awful lot of Football League appearances including time as Crawley Town’s captain, and in more recent times has been a mainstay for two clubs at this level in the shape of Guiseley and Sutton”. |
