....Marc Newsham from NPL Premier Division side Matlock Town and taken
youngster Charlie Wakefield on loan from Vanarama National League side
Chesterfield.
Then-new Matlock
managers Glenn Kirkwood and Craig Hopkins made Newsham their first signing for
the 2016/17 campaign.
The joint bosses,
who succeeded Mark Hume, signed Newsham after he scored 6 goals for
Gainsborough Trinity in 26 outings in the National League North the previous
season.
Newsham started his career
at Rotherham United, netting 7 times in 48 appearances before enjoying loan
spells at Sheffield FC, Gainsborough, Ilkeston Town and Boston United.
At the latter he
enjoyed his most prolific spell, netting 110 times in 209 appearances for the
Pilgrims between 2009 and 2013.
Wakefield made the
step up from youth team to the Spireites first-team during the 2016/17 season.
Born in Derby,
Wakefield made his first-team debut when he appeared as a late substitute in
the 3-1 defeat at Scunthorpe United in April 2017 when still a first-year
scholar.
Wakefield also has
an eye for goal, with goals against Walsall in the FA Youth Cup and Mansfield
Town for the reserves catching the eye during last season.
A left-footed
player, Wakefield is comfortable playing at either left-back, central or left
midfield.
Wakefield, who has
been with the club since the age of 10, made his first league start on the
opening day of the 2017/18 season against Grimsby Town.
