The former Deeping Rangers under-18 boss resigned as the Clarets' vice-chairman last week.

Jimmy McDonnell, who was jointly in charge of the Wakes the last term alongside Phil Gadsby, returns to Abbey Lawn as Porter's assistant.

Porter told Spalding Today: "It all came about quite quickly.

"In football management, you get consumed by every season and don't think too much about what will happen next.

"That was the case until we finished a really good campaign at Deeping because we put a lot of time and effort into everything.

"I knew Bourne was still looking for a manager, I had an interview at the end of last week and I was lucky enough to get the job.

"I don't have a massive amount of knowledge about this league, so it will be important to have Jimmy here as well.

"We did our coaching badges on the same course and Phil is also a friend of mine, so I kept a close eye on Bourne's results last season.

"When I found out I had got this job, Jimmy was the first person who I wanted to get involved.

"I wanted a little bit of reassurance that the club is as good as everyone says.

"By their own admission, they dropped points to finish 10th in UCL Division One when they could have easily ended up in the top five.

"We want to keep the majority of the squad together. These lads have done well and deserve another chance."

Porter was the driving force behind Deeping's under-18 midweek team which won the Thurlow Nunn Youth League West Division and League Cup before finishing runners-up in the championship play-off final.

He added: "I've been involved in football for a long time, coaching different teams and watching from the sidelines by learning from two or three managers at Peterborough United as well.

"I wanted to get back into senior football and I had an opportunity to join Michael Goode's staff at Deeping.

"He has been brilliant to me in offering a chance to take the step up.

"But I wanted to take on this team at Bourne because I know a lot of people work hard behind the scenes for the right reasons.

"I'm really excited to help as much as I can".
