Today marks the end of a career spanning 18 years and 718 appearances for the first-team since making his debut as a 16-year-old way back in the 2000/01 season and in in 2010 he surpassed the previous record of 413 held by Stan Myers.
Webb last played a competitive game for the club last season and made the jump into coaching as part of Marc Richards backroom set up for the 2018/19 season.
His career was celebrated at the awards night at the end of last season where glowing tributes were paid by past managers and club officials alike.
Webb has also been named as a finalist in the Gloucestershire Sports Awards 2018 in the ‘Outstanding Services to Sport in Gloucestershire’ category, which will be held at Cheltenham Racecourse on November 1st.
Club owner Eamonn McGurk told http://www.gloucestercityafc.com: “Loyalty in football is a very rare commodity these days and one club players are very few and far between. When you think of ‘one club men’ the names Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Steven Gerrard spring to mind. All were the embodiment of their respective clubs and I believe we had and still have that in Tom, which is why I’m so pleased that he has made the step up into coaching.
“The way he has represented Gloucester City on and off the field is a testament to him as a man and a player and is the living essence of what Gloucester City is about, passion, combativeness, a never say die attitude and above all integrity. I want to offer my personal thanks to him for the way he has represented Gloucester City and wish him all the best in the next phase of his career.”
Chairman Rod Jenner added: “What can I say that’s not already been said about Tom Webb. I’ve only been involved in football really for 12 months, but I’m privileged to know Tom someone who is both mentor and Icon to so many in the City and the Community.
“Like Eamonn said, he is the essence of what being a Gloucester City player is all about and I hope that by moving into coaching, he will pass that down to generations of young up and coming Gloucester City players. He was club captain when I arrived and for me he’s the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be.
“Which is why it is my pleasure to announce that when the new Meadow Park is built, Eamonn, myself and the management board have all unanimously decided that the T-End will be named ‘The Tom Webb T-End Stand’, to honour the achievements and career of a truly remarkable player.”
However, as one door closes another opens as Webb will step up with Mike Green to take charge of the first-team in the Third Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup tomorrow against Dorking Wanderers at the Jubilee Stadium following Marc Richards` departure to Hereford FC.
