Carruthers's has an impressive management CV in non-League football as well as a fine playing career with many clubs but best known for playing with Stoke City, Peterborough United, Southend United, Scunthorpe United and Macclesfield Town.

He was last manager at Basford United, who he helped move up to Step 3 in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Carruthers and his team achieved FIVE promotions in his time at Basford, dating back to the 2012/13 season when they were promoted from the East Midlands Counties League at Step 6 and by the 2017/18 season got Basford from promoted from the NPL First Division South to the Premier Division.
