Ironton
returns after a four-year break to take the reins at Herns Lane in succession
to Dean Barker, who left for Southern Premier Central side Kings Langley a
fortnight ago.
Ironton
managed Arlesey Town in two spells, winning three successive Isthmian League
promotions and taking the Bedfordshire side to the First Round of the FA Cup
and quarter finals of the FA Trophy.
He also
developed the careers of Dave Kitson, Craig Mackail-Smith and Jack Midson with
Arlesey before they all went into the professional game.
Ironton
spent two seasons at Ware, saving the East Herts club from near certain
relegation and has also managed Vanarama National League South outfit Hemel
Hempstead Town.
A former England
semi pro international midfielder Ironton, who lives in Welwyn Garden City, had
a glittering playing career winning two Conference titles and an FA Trophy with
Enfield and a third Conference crown with Barnet, having begun as a
professional at QPR.
Welwyn secretary
Phil Ravitz told https://www.welwyngardencityfc.org.uk: “We had a very high
calibre of candidates interested in the post, but Nick stood out. He’s a local
man, who knows and understands our club and its potential. He has a vision for
Welwyn Garden City FC and we as a club will do everything we can to see that
vision realised.’’
Ironton
will announce his backroom staff in due course. |
