Barnes began his career at Stockport County, where he left after 10 years at Edgeley Park.

He spent time with Northwich Victoria and Marine AFC after trials with Manchester United, Hull City, and Queens Park Rangers.

He then signed for Southport, before being loaned out to Chorley.

After his loan expired, he then moved on to Vauxhall Motors following his departure from Southport. His time at Vauxhall was an 18-month spell before Motors folded the first team.

After a two-year break from football, he joined Colwyn Bay where he spent a campaign and a pre-season before being recruited by Nantwich ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

The 27-year-old was a mainstay in the Dabbers side that reached the play-offs last season.
