National League club Wrexham produced a good performance, but a strong SkyBet
Championship side Stoke City's class came through in the end to triumph 3-1 at
the Racecourse Ground.
Bryan
Hughes' side recovered from an early Tyrese Campbell set-back by equalising
through Bobby Grant after 26 minutes.
But
Championship side Stoke stepped up a gear after the break and showed why they
are a club that has ambitions of returning to the Premier League by putting the
game beyond Wrexham with two unanswered goals from Welsh international Sam Vokes
to seal a 3-1 victory.
Wrexham`s
league rivals Dagenham & Redbridge were beaten 4-0 at Victoria Road by
Stoke`s new league opponents, Charlton Athletic.
Brandon
Wiredu made is three goals in as many games while Tom Lockyer, former Leyton
Orient star Macauley Bonne and Ben Dempsey all opened their Charlton accounts
as the Addicks swept aside the Daggers.
Tom
Clare, Jay Rollins, Jordan Thewlis and George Green all scored as National
League North club Boston United made Lincolnshire Senior Cup progress.
The
Pilgrims defeated League One Scunthorpe United 4-2 at The Jakemans Stadium
courtesy of Clare's 5th minute header, Rollins' fine angled strike in the 10th
minute and Thewlis' bullet 2 minutes before the break.
George
Green added a fine fourth in the 70th minute, with John McAtee on target for
the Iron towards the end of both halves.
BetVictor
Southern League Premier Division South club Hendon's run of three home
pre-season matches began with a single goal defeat at the hands of BetVictor Isthmian
League South Central side FC Romania.
In
a feisty encounter in which both sides struck the crossbar in the opening 45 minutes,
it was the visitors who got the only goal of the game on the stroke of
half-time through George Taban.
Five
second-half goals from League Two side Forest Green Rovers saw them secure a
6-1 victory over Southern League Division One South hosts Yate Town.
The
game took no time at all to grab the attention as Aaron Collins and Yate’s Olly
Mehew had both found the back of the net after 10 minutes.
Both
sides went in level, but the League side were able to stamp their authority on
proceedings in the second half as braces from Joe Mills and George Williams, as
well as a strike from Junior Mondal wrapped up the win.
National
league North club Hereford FC shared a 2-2 draw with Forest Green`s league
rivals Cheltenham Town.
Will
Boyle put the Robins ahead in the 19th minute.
The
Bulls levelled through Reece Styche in the 41st minute, but George Lloyd
restored Cheltenham's lead against his former loan club just before the break.
Hereford
scored again in the 53rd minute through a Jordan Cullinane-Liburd header after
from a corner from the right.
League
Two new boys Leyton Orient overcame Isthmian Premier neighbours Hornchurch FC
by a single goal at Bridge Avenue.
Lee
Angol picked out the top corner after capitalising on an Urchins mistake
shortly after the hour mark.
BetVictor
Northern Premier League Premier Division club Stalybridge Celtic beat Premier
League Burnley`s under-23s 3-1 at Bower Fold.
Stalybridge
went ahead when winger Neil Kengni swivelled in the box to fire home after the
Clarets couldn’t clear a corner in a disappointing start.
And
the visitors were undone again just two minutes later when experienced striker
Craig Hobson headed home.
But
it was a superb piece of football that saw Burnley briefly get back in the contest.
A
brilliant through-ball from a midfield trialist dissected the Celtic defence
and found Tunde Bayode, whose quick feet saw the winger round goalkeeper
Patrick Mahome and slot home.
But
just when it looked as though the Clarets might build up a head of steam they
conceded a poor third goal.
Kengni’s
low cross should have been dealt with by goalkeeper Kai Calderbank-Park but he
was beaten at the near post, possibly via a touch from Hobson.
Assistant
boss Shaun Gardner netted National League North club Bradford Park Avenue`s
consolation as they were beaten 5-1 at the Horsfall Stadium by League One side
with Rotherham United, whose goals came from a Kyle Vassell hat-trick and
singles from new signing Freddie Ladapo and Daniel Barlaser. |
