The former Frickley Athletic right back, who can also play in midfield, netted the Pilgrims winner in the pre-season victory over Grimsby Town with a long-range curler and also impressed against Worksop Town.

United boss Craig Elliott has added Byrne to his squad, citing a desire for competition for places across his team.

The attack-minded Byrne, 22, originates from Ireland which is where he played most of his football.

He had been training with SkyBet League Two side Burton Albion before signing for BetVictor Northern Premier League Division One South East side Frickley Athletic in March.

He is the nephew of Irish internationals Stephen and Alan Quinn and previously played with Longford Town and also lined up for Crumlin United's Leinster Senior League side.

He first signed for League of Ireland side Cabinteely in the summer of 2015 and made his league debut from the bench against Finn Harps in July 2015.

His first goal for the club came two months later - also against Finn Harps - and he ended that season with 12 league appearances to his name.

In 2016, Byrne made 19 league appearances for Cabinteely and in 2017 he scored once in 21 appearances.
