The
Heed have signed Alexandros Sakellaropoulos on a one-year deal.
The
19-year-old joins having most recently spent time with Carlisle United after he
joined the League Two side after spells with Greek outfits Panegialios and previous
to that, Thyella Egiou.
The
centre-back, who is also can also play on the left side of defence, makes his
stay at Gateshead permanent after impressing whilst on trial with the club over
recent weeks, appearing against both Consett and Harrogate Town.
He
told www.gateshead-fc.com: “I’m really happy.
“The
manager and all of the staff have given me a good opportunity to play in the
National League North for a great team with a great stadium.
“We’re
a team who are aiming for promotion, it’s going to be hard but I think we’re a
tough, strong team.”
Meanwhile,
former Hartlepool United favourite Michael Nelson is joining Gateshead as a
player-coach.
The
39-year-old defender has been at the Heed since the start of pre-season and has
played in several friendly matches as a ‘trialist’.
After
beginning at Bishop Auckland and then Bury, Nelson made over 300 appearances
for Hartlepool between 2003 and 2009.
Since
leaving Pools in 2009, Nelson has featured for several clubs including Norwich
City, Scunthorpe United, Scottish sides Kilmarnock and Hibernian, Bradford
City, Cambridge United, Barnet and most recently National League outfit Chesterfield,
where he spent last season as a player-coach, making 13 appearances.
