Avenue Bring in Two Ex-England Youngsters
Vanarama National League North club Bradford Park Avenue have brought in two youngsters recently released by professional clubs.

Midfielder Marcus Wood has joined after leaving troubled SkyBet Championship side Bolton Wanderers.

 

Wood earned a professional deal with the Trotters in the summer of 2018 after impressing in the under-23s after joining from Manchester City.

 

Born in Sale, Wood (pictured) played for City in the UEFA Youth League and has also represented England at under-18 and under-19 level.

 

He was also part of the City squad which lost the 2016 FA Youth Cup final to Chelsea.

 

He is no stranger to the National League North, however, as he had a spell on loan with Southport during last season.

 

Also joining Avenue is former Aston Villa academy defender Riccardo Calder.

 

Calder was part of the Villa under-19’s team which won the 2012/13 NextGen Series, beating Chelsea in the final of the competition.

 

Whilst on Villa`s books he had loan spells with Dundee, Doncaster Rovers where, in two spells he made 23 appearances, and Lincoln City.

 

Upon his release from Villa Park, the 4-times capped England under-17 international joined Scottish Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle, for whom he played 32 times, scoring one goal.

 

Speaking about the signing, interim boss Marcus Law admitted the signing may be controversial amongst supporters, telling https://bpafc.com: “We’re aware that there may be some controversy around this signing. Riccardo’s recently come back to football after serving a short sentence. I won’t go into the details here, but he’s made a mistake, served his time and is looking to rebuild his life.

 

“Since I came on board with the Avenue it’s been stressed to me that we are a community club. So, with that in mind I think it’s the perfect environment for the lad to rebuild his career in the game, and I hope the fans will join myself and Lee in welcoming Riccardo in with open arms”.
