The
22-year-old joined the Magpies academy at the age of 8 and moved up through
every age group and represented England at under-20 level.
In
January 2015, Roberts made his first team debut during a 1-0 FA Cup Third Round
defeat to Leicester City as a second half substitute.
Soon
after his senior bow, Roberts had a brief loan spell at Gateshead before
returning to Newcastle to become a leading player in the under-23 set-up.
He
then furthered his senior education when current Blyth manager Lee Clark took
him north of the border to Kilmarnock on loan in 2017.
And
after a string of stand-out performances in the under-23s run to the
quarter-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy last season, Roberts was handed his
second first team chance, which would prove to be an extra memorable occasion.
In
an FA Cup Third Round replay at Ewood Park in January, Roberts netted his
first-ever senior goal in front of the BT Sport cameras, volleying home a Jacob
Murphy cross from inside the penalty area.
A
short loan spell at League Two outfit Colchester United followed before leaving
the Magpies in the summer after 14 years at St James`s Park. |
