Cup
competitions are littered with lower league teams holding higher-grade opponents
in their initial tie only for the upset to be avoided second time around.
But
in the case of Uhlsport United Counties League Premier Division side Deeping
Rangers, BetVictor Northern Premier League Division One North West outfit Colne
and NPL Division One South East Sutton Coldfield Town, it was definitely second
time lucky as all ousted teams from a league above.
Deeping
were held at home by Isthmian League North side AFC Sudbury last Saturday, who were
expected to complete the mission at their own MEL Group Stadium last night.
However
Deeping, who have a good recent FA Cup record, ran out 3-2 winners in a thrilling
replay.
It
couldn`t have started better for the Suffolk hosts though as their experienced
striker Sean Marks put them in front inside the opening minute.
But
crucially Sam Murphy equalised within 3 minutes and then the first of Jordan
MacLeod's two goals on the break after 23 minutes sent the visitors into
half-time in front.
Marks
levelled matters 7 minutes into the second half, but McLeod sealed Deeping`s
place in the next round with a 62nd minute second for the former Peterborough
Sports striker.
South
Shields were many pundits` choices as potential Northern Premier League Premier
Division promotion favourites this season, and now they have one less cup
competition to worry about as they were beaten 1-0 at the Sovereign Play
Stadium by Colne from the league below.
In
front of a crowd of 231 boosted by a decent following from the north-east, a Hakan
Burton penalty save from Josh Gillies` effort immediately after half-time and a
goal from Waqas Azam on 62 minutes proved decisive for the Lancastrians.
And
at The Trico Stadium, Southern League Premier Division club Redditch United
were looking to complete the task of beating Sutton Coldfield after holding
them on the 3G at Coles Park last weekend.
And
Michael Nelson gave the Reds a 24th minute lead, but a Reece Leek penalty
pulled the Royals level on 33 minutes and then sub Joel Powney on 78 minutes
and recent signing Isa Marselia 4 minutes later sealed a tie against Vanarama
National League North side Kettering Town in the next round.
There
were several teams who avoided upsets after being held by lower league opponents
last weekend.
NPL
Premier Division Ashton United found themselves a 5th minute Ioan
Evans goal down at Hurst Cross against NPL Division One North West side Tadcaster
Albion.
But
the visitors were sent back across the Pennines out of the FA Cup after an
Aaron Smith brace and singles for Josh Wilson and Steven Tames saw Ashton
triumph 4-2 – Alex Wiles with Taddy`s second.
Ashton`s
league rivals Warrington Town avoided an upset at Tadcaster`s new league rivals,
City of Liverpool.
The
Purps` run was ended with goals from Alex Byrne in the opening minute, Mark
Roberts and Ben Garrity made it 3-0 at the break and Tony Gray added a fourth
in the 71st minute.
A
crowd of 550 saw another NPL Division One North West side, Marske United, bow
out at home against NPL Premier Division opponents in Scarborough Athletic,
whose James Walshaw after 23 minutes and then Assenso Isaac 8 minutes from time
cancelled out Andrew Stephenson`s 6th minute opener for the Teesside
outfit.
Better
news for Marske`s league rivals Ossett United, who made no mistake at Ingfield
against Ebac Northern League side Thornaby, hitting the visitors for six without
reply.
Former
FC United of Manchester`s player-manager Tom Greaves enjoyed himself with a
personal tally of four, with Nick Guest and Elliott Harrison adding the others.
Isthmian
League Premier Division side Worthing edged through by the odd goal in five at The
Bibby Financial Services Stadium against Isthmian South East outfit Hastings
United – but it took extra-time.
A
crowd of 510 saw Craig Stone after 16 minutes and Ben Pope 2 minutes after
half-time give Hastings a 2-0 lead.
Lloyd
Dawes on 77 minutes and then sub Ollie Pearce pulled the Rebels level and
earned an extra 30 minutes in which another sub, Marvin Armstrong just avoided
penalties by netting a 119th minute winner.
Southern
League Premier Division Central side Needham Market edged out Isthmian North
visitors Dereham Town 2-1 at Bloomfields.
Gareth
Heath broke the deadlock to give the Marketmen the lead just before half-time.
Joe
Neal added a second with 5 minutes remaining, with Adam Hipperson`s penalty
reply coming too late to mount a comeback.
And
the Marketmen`s new league rivals, Peterborough Sports, also went through in
their home replay against Isthmian Premier outfit East Thurrock United.
A
Dan Lawlor penalty after 6 minutes for Sports was cancelled out by Frankie
Merrifield on 34 minutes, only for Cameron Johnson to send the home side into
the break 2-1 up with a goal right on the whistle.
Dion
Sembie-Ferris stretched Sports` lead to 3-1 with 7 minutes to go, but a late
goal from sub Ayo Olukoga led to a frantic finale.
Southern
Premier Division South outfit Metropolitan Police bowed out, losing by the odd
goal in five at Isthmian Premier newcomers Horsham at The Camping World
Community Stadium.
The
Met led through Bilal Sayoud`s 9th minute effort which was overturned by Harvey
Sparks and Chris Smith either side of half-time.
Luke
Robertson pulled the visitors back on terms in the 81st minute, only for Smith
to win it for the Hornets in stoppage time.
Peterborough
Sports` league rivals Banbury United went out 1-0 at NPL Premier Division
Gainsborough Trinity`s Northolme, courtesy of a goal 3 minutes after half-time from
Kingsley James.
Isthmian
North side Canvey Island edged out ten-man Isthmian South Central visitors
Waltham Abbey 2-1 at The Frost Financial Stadium.
A
Dominique Yiagnigni own goal gave the Gulls a 9th minute lead that
Leon McKenzie eventually cancelled out on the hour-mark.
But
the Abbots had defender Ryan Dear dismissed with a straight red card on 81
minutes and a last-gasp header by Jason Hallett saw the home side through.
Uhlsport
Hellenic League Premier Division Flackwell Heath beat Southern Counties East
League Division One side Sutton Athletic 3-1.
An
Ashley Howell brace helped Heath see off the Step 6 outfit.
And
in an all-Toolstation Western League Premier Division replay, Shepton Mallet went
down 2-1 at home to newly promoted Tavistock.
Jack
Crago bagged a brace for the Devon visitors.
