Watson replaces the outgoing Ian Hendon as Garry Hill’s right-hand man.

The 45-year-old played for Tottenham Hotspur in the early 1990s before carving out a long Football League career with the likes of Swindon Town, Rotherham United, Reading and Colchester United, winning four promotions including two into the Championship.

His coaching career began at Luton Town in 2009, and then alongside Teddy Sheringham as assistant manager at Stevenage.

He has also been assistant-manager at Eastleigh, spent 14 months as manager of Bishop’s Stortford and worked as assistant boss at Hungerford Town.
