BetVictor Northern Premier League Premier Division club Warrington Town have seen their longest-serving player, defender James McCarten, leave to join NPL Division One North West side City of Liverpool.

The 6’3 centre-half started his career with Everton as youth player and captained their under-18 side, being named as their player of the year in 2009.

He later joined Welsh Premier side Aberystwyth before heading to Warrington in 2012.

The now 28-year-old was the last surviving member of the heroic FA Cup team of 2014 and made more than 250 appearances for the club.

But he suffered a serious injury in a league game against Altrincham in January 2018 that saw him on the sidelines for more than a year.

On his return last season, he had loan spells with Bamber Bridge and City of Liverpool to regain match fitness.

But he has found chances limited at Cantilever Park since and his last appearance for the club, which was his eighth consecutive start, came in the 1-1 draw at Radcliffe in September.
