Clegg took over as boss of Colls in May 2014, replacing Steve Pilling, having spent the previous season as manager at neighbours Atherton Laburnum Rovers.

And he led them to three promotions in five years which saw the club rise from the Hallmark Security League Division One to the Northern Premier League for the first time in its history.

Joint-chairman David and Jonathan Burke told https://ashtonunited.co.uk: “Despite broad interest in our vacancy from a number of outstanding individuals, Michael fits the ethos and ambition of our club perfectly.

“We look forward to him taking the reigns and introducing new impetus to the club as we look to quickly climb the league.”

Josh Wilson will take interim charge of the team this weekend against Radcliffe.
