He
had re-joined Moneyfields in December 2016 from Gosport Borough for an undisclosed
fee.
Wooden
joined Boro whilst they were in the Southern League Division One South &
West as a fresh-faced teenager and went onto to firmly write himself in Boro’s
history books.
He
was an integral part of the promotion-winning squad of 2011/12 which saw
the-then Gosport squad gain promotion to the Southern Premier Division via the
play-offs.
But
it was the following season where his exploits truly made all the difference.
He
partnered Rory Williams up front in the absence of talismanic striker Justin
Bennett and between them, scored well over 30 goals as they terrorised
countless defences in the Premier Division.
Their
goals propelled Boro up the division into the top five with an astonishing 23-match
unbeaten run and a play-off place was secured.
Another
play-off campaign beckoned, and it was Wooden’s goal in the semi-final at
Stourbridge that set Gosport on course for the final at Hemel Hempstead Town -
Boro were promoted via a penalty shoot-out after the game had ended 2-2 after
extra-time.
The
following season in the Conference South saw Wooden feature prominently once
again.
The
fairytale run to Wembley was entwined with another good season for him and the
popular midfielder played a part under the arch as a second half substitute in
Gosport’s 4-0 defeat against Cambridge United.
The
following two seasons saw Wooden score some spectacular goals including
memorable efforts against Hayes & Yeading United, Ebbsfleet United but most
memorably against Havant & Waterlooville in the 2015 Boxing Day derby.
This
strike propelled Wooden to national fame, as TV stations and numerous
newspapers and magazines publicised the wonder strike.
He
spent a couple of decent seasons back at Moneyfields before departing in the
summer of 2019 for Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Premier side AFC Portchester.
He
was quickly off the mark upon his return to the club, although his goal was
only a consolation in a 3-1 defeat at Winchester City on Tuesday night. |
