George Donnelly is back for his third spell with the club after debuting in his teenage years back in 2006.
He made 99 appearances scoring 63 goals before being snapped up in the summer of 2009 by Football League side Plymouth Argyle.
He went on to play for Luton Town, Stockport County, Fleetwood Town, Macclesfield Town and Tranmere Rovers.
He began his career at Runcorn Town before being signed by Tommy Lawson at Skem and he was capped at international level, making one appearance for England C in 2011.
After departing Tranmere, he returned for a second spell which saw one goal in eight appearances in the 2015/16 season.
He has recently spent time with Hallmark Security Leaguers AFC Liverpool and signs from Marine AFC where he had re-united with Tommy Lawson.
Donnelly told Skelmersdale`s website: "It’s nice to be back to where it all started for me. My last spell wasn't too enjoyable due to playing time and fitness issues but when they contacted me, I didn't hesitate to return. This is the first pre-season I’ve had in over three years, so I'm looking forward to getting this one under my belt and getting Skem back up the leagues."
Young midfielder Adam Weston has also completed his return to United.
Weston, who made a single appearance in the senior team under Lawson in the 2016/17 season opener, spent time with Manchester United and Preston North End in his youth before the move to Skem.
He moved on to new league rivals Widnes with whom he won the North West Counties Division One title before spells with AFC Liverpool and most recently Northwich Victoria.
