Coming
out of retirement as a favour to the club`s chairman is now 40-year-old
Emmerson Boyce, the Barbados international defender who skippered Wigan Athletic
to their memorable and unexpected win over Manchester City in the final at
Wembley and jointly lifted the cup with non-playing club captain Gary Caldwell.
Boyce
retired from playing in 2016 after a career which began at Luton Town and took
in a spell at Crystal Palace before joining Wigan for £1m in the summer of 2006.
He
went on to play 263 times for the Latics and ended his professional playing
career with Blackpool.
His
move to Ashton comes 18 months after the high-profile capture of another former
Wigan defender, Pascal Chimbonda.
Since
retiring, Boyce has been commentating for BBC Manchester and has also set up
the Emmerson Boyce Football Academy which is based in the Wigan, Warrington and
Altrincham areas so far and is also being set up in Barbados. |
