It
came 24 hours after the news filtered through that veteran George Borg had
resigned as manager and was swiftly replaced by former Walthamstow boss Ryan
Maxwell.
Maxwell
and his assistant Nicky Symons worked very swiftly to bring in no less than
EIGHT new players ahead of kick-off and, despite the fact that only skipper
Matt Johnson, Olu Olu and Johnville Renee remained from the Iron's 4-0 defeat
at Eastbourne Borough last Saturday.
Goalkeeper
Patrick Ohman kept a clean sheet on his debut after joining on dual registration
from Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division side Carshalton Athletic.
The
25-year-old re-joined Carshalton in the summer from Southern Premier Division
South side Walton Casuals, who he had signed for in late January 2020.
The
Swedish/Australian keeper had been with Hendon, who he signed for in November
2019 having previously been with Carshalton.
He
was also on the books at Egham Town and Chelmsford City. Signed dual
registration forms with National League South side Braintree Town in November
2020.
Forward
Tom Derry and right back Marcus Johnson-Schuster both arrived from Southern
League Premier Division South side Hayes & Yeading United, also on dual
forms.
Derry
re-joined Hayes & Yeading in October 2020 having been with the Iron`s
league rivals Tonbridge Angels, who he joined in February 2019, helping them to
promotion by the season`s end.
Derry's
first spell with United in January 2015 saw him sign upon his release by
National League side Aldershot Town.
He
originally came through the youth academy at Charlton Athletic and despite
being a regular in the Addicks youth and reserve sides, he was released at the
end of his scholarship and signed his first professional contract with
Gillingham.
Two
loan spells at Conference level followed with Chelmsford City and Eastbourne
Borough before he negotiated his release from the Gills and signed permanently
for Eastbourne.
In
the summer of 2014, a successful trial led to him being signed by Aldershot and
he has also spent time with Leatherhead and Kingstonian prior to joining
Tonbridge.
Johnson-Schuster
also joined Hayes & Yeading in October 2020 having been with another of
Braintree`s league rivals, Hungerford Town, last season.
He
started out with Plymouth Argyle before signing for Basingstoke Town and then
Metropolitan Police during the 2013/14 season.
From
there he signed for Swindon Supermarine before returning to Basingstoke in the
summer of 2016.
After
just over a season with `Stoke he signed for Wealdstone before switching to
Hungerford during the 2018/19 season.
Jamaican
international left-back Nathan Smith joins the Iron from league rivals Dulwich
Hamlet.
The
33-year-old signed for Dulwich in November 2019.
He
can play at left-back or centre-back and was with National League side Dagenham
& Redbridge in 2018/19 and amassed over 250 appearances for Yeovil Town
over two spells at the club.
He
started out in non-League football with Enfield, Waltham Forest and Potters Bar
Town before being signed by then-League One Yeovil Town in 2008.
He
went on to be Yeovil's record appearance holder in the Football League and also
spent three seasons at Chesterfield, where he was named fans' player of the
year and the players' player of the year in 2013 before re-joining the Glovers.
He
is a Jamaican international with two caps for his country.
Just
a week after scoring against them, centre-back Taofiq Olomewewe has joined from
league rivals Hemel Hempstead Town.
The
23-year-old came through the Nike Academy to sign for Burnley in March 2016.
However,
he was released by the Premier League side without making a senior appearance
and signed for Isthmian League North outfit Maldon & Tiptree in September
2017.
He
was quickly picked up by then-National League South side Wealdstone and spent
just over a year with the Stones before going on to have spells with Enfield
Town, Worthing, Hendon and in September 2019, Hungerford Town.
He
was made skipper of the Crusaders before returning to Essex to join rivals Chelmsford
City in January 2020, signing for Hemel in the summer.
Returning
to Cressing Road on dual terms from Isthmian Premier side Cray Wanderers is
forward Jason Banton (pictured).
The
27-year-old joined Cray in the summer from Isthmian North side Romford, who he
joined in early December 2019 from the Iron.
He
had been with Braintree after arriving from National League outfit Torquay
United in August 2019 having spent the 2018/19 season on loan at Southern
Premier South outfit Truro City.
He
was an England under-17 international and had a number of clubs as a young
player, spending time at Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool and Leicester
City, before making his debut in the Football League at Burton Albion in
October 2011.
He
signed with Crystal Palace in 2012 and was loaned out to Plymouth Argyle and MK
Dons before joining Plymouth permanently in January 2014. He signed with
Wycombe Wanderers in June 2015 and spent a brief time on loan at Hartlepool
United.
In
February 2016 he signed for Notts County until the end of the 2015/16 season,
he was released by the Magpies at the end of the season and signed for Crawley
Town, subsequently going on loan to Scottish Premiership side Partick Thistle.
At
the end of the 2016/17 season he was released by Crawley and joined National
League side Woking.
In
June 2018 he joined Torquay and had loan spells at St Albans City and Dulwich
Hamlet as well as the White Tigers.
Two
players have come in on dual forms from another Isthmian Premier outfit,
Bishop`s Stortford.
Correy
Davidson is a 27-year-old winger who re-signed for Bishop`s Stortford in the
summer after being with National League North club Kidderminster Harriers since
July 2019 after impressing on trial.
The
Dublin born player started with Bohemians and then turned out for Carrick
Rangers and Ards before moving to England in 2014, signing for AFC Sudbury.
In
February 2015 he moved onto Grays Athletic, who he re-joined in December 2015
following a stint with Heybridge Swifts, St Neots Town and Ware.
In
the summer of 2016, he joined Waltham Forest and then stepped up a couple of
levels with Bishop`s Stortford in January 2017.
After
a spell with Witham Town, he signed for Concord Rangers in January 2019.
Sam
Robbins is a defender who joined Bishop`s Stortford from Waltham Abbey in the
summer of 2018.
He
began his career at Wingate & Finchley before moving on to the Abbotts
where he spent three seasons.
At
the end of the 2018/19 season he was awarded both the players’ and managers`
player of the season award. |
