A round-up of Saturday`s friendly games involving teams from the Vanarama National League.

National League…..

 

Last season`s Promotion Final losers Boreham Wood were handed a lesson in their now annual pre-season friendly against a very strong Arsenal side at Meadow Park.

 

Unai Emery got his Arsenal career off to a storming start as the Gunners ran in eight goals without reply.

 

The Spaniard named a strong side and it was Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang who helped them to a 5-0 lead with a first half hat-trick before being replaced at the break.

 

Reiss Nelson, Alexandre Lacazette, Eddie Nketiah, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were also on target for the Gunners.

 

Newly-promoted Braintree Town enjoyed a fine 2-0 home win over a strong Championship side Ipswich Town.

 

Aaryan Tajbakhsh produced two fine finishes with the outside of the boot in the 13th minute and a curling free-kick in the 64th minute to seal the Iron`s win.

 

Salford City, also newly-promoted, lost 1-0 at the Peninsula Stadium to League One Barnsley.

 

Ryan Hedges' superb curling effort from just inside the box after 28 minutes was the only goal of the game.

 

Newcomers Barnet picked up their first win of pre-season following a controlled display against a Fulham under-23 side.

 

Barnet took the lead on the half-hour mark through a calamitous own goal forced by great pressing by Shaq Coulthirst and Ephron Mason-Clark.

 

Chesterfield, who came down from League Two with the Bees, came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at National League North side Boston United.

 

Zavon Hines scoring towards the end of the first half after Adam Marriott had given the Pilgrims the lead.

 

Bromley hosted Bostik League South East tenants Cray Wanderers at Hayes Lane and ran out 2-0 winners.

 

Bobby-Joe Taylor and Dan Johnson were the Ravens` marksmen.

 

The Wands went down to ten-men with 14 minutes left on the clock, after he inexplicably ran up behind Frankie Raymond and struck him on the back of the head.

 

Maidstone United were too strong for Championship side Nottingham Forest`s under-23s.

 

The Stones ran out 5-0 winners at the Gallagher Stadium with Andre Coker bagging a late brace, Shamir Mullings, Blair Turgott and Joe Quigley adding the others.

 

FC Halifax Town were beaten 2-1 by Championship visitors Bolton Wanderers.

 

Goals either side of half-time from Adam Le Fondre and Sammy Ameobi won it for the visitors, with Mekhi McLeod replying.

 

Teenager Benji Kimpioka came off the bench to level with virtually the last kick of the match to earn League One Sunderland a draw at Hartlepool United.

 

New boy Niko Muir had taken advantage of a defensive error to put Pools ahead in the first half at Victoria Park, and as the clock passed the 90-minute mark it seemed that Jack Ross’ side was on course for a second defeat against non-League opposition in the space of a week following Tuesday’s reverse at Darlington.

 

But 18-year-old academy product Kimpioka spared Sunderland’s blushes with a neat turn and finish right at the death.

 

Maidenhead United ran out 6-2 winners at Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier side Windsor FC.

 

Josh Kelly with a hat-trick, Nana Owusu, Sean McCormick and Ryan Bird were the Magpies` scorers – and Jamie Di Giuseppe from the spot and Rob Lazarczuk for the home side.

 

Barrow AFC beat League Two Crewe Alexandra 1-0 at Holker Street.

 

The Bluebirds took the lead when a free-kick from 30 yards out in the middle of the park was rifled goalward by former Crewe man Lee Molyneux and a young trialist followed up to fire home.

 

Aldershot Town began pre-season with a flourish which brought four first-half goals at Fetcham Grove against Bostik League Premier side Leatherhead.

 

Shamir Fenelon scored two, Matt McClure one and there was a goal for an impressive trialist, who also created the three other goals.

 

Championship side Preston North End hit AFC Fylde for six in the first meeting between the clubs at Mill Farm.

 

It was an impressive display from Alex Neil's men against a Coasters side who reached the play-offs last season.

 

Paul Huntington headed North End in front, Callum Robinson struck twice with shots from the edge of the box before the visitors changed their full team after an hour.

 

Sean Maguire helped himself to two goals, with Andrew Hughes rounding-off the visitors' scoring.

 

The home side pulled a goal back late on, one of their trialists netting from the penalty spot.

 

Ebbsfleet United tour friendly on the Algarve ended in a 4-2 victory.

 

Having trailed opponents FC Ferreiras of the Campeonato de Portugal by 2-1 at the Estádio de Nora in Albufeira, Fleet racked up three more goals in the second half.

 

Goalscorers for the tourists were Chris Bush, two for Myles Weston and Danny Kedwell.

 

Fleet`s Kent rivals Dover Athletic shared a 1-1 draw at the Fullicks Stadium against Bostik Premier hosts Folkestone Invicta.

 

Johan Ter Horst gave Invicta a 27th minute lead that Inih Effiong cancelled out in the second period.

 

St Albvans City won 2-1 at Southern Premier South side Hendon.

 

Khale Da Costa and a trialist gave the Saints a 2-0 interval lead.

 

Dylan Kearney struck in the 87th minute for the Greens but Dean Snedker saved an 89th minute penalty to prevent the hosts from levelling.

 

National League North…..

 

Championship side Aston Villa ran out comfortable 3-0 winners against hosts AFC Telford United at the New Bucks Head.

 

Jonathan Kodjia scored twice – heading in from close range on both occasions - before teeing up Conor Hourihane inside the box to seal a comprehensive victory.

 

Another Villa side played the Bucks` league rivals Kidderminster Harriers at Aggborough and shared a 1-1 draw.

 

Youngster Harvey Knibbs got the goal for Villa after Fraser Horsfall had given Harriers the lead.

 

League Two Oldham Athletic ran out 2-0 winners at neighbours Curzon Ashton with a Dan Gardner free-kick 10 minutes into the second half and a trialist sealing the win in the final 5 minutes of the game.

 

Chester FC enjoyed an entertaining 5-3 victory at Evo-Stik Northern Premier West new boys Runcorn Linnets.

 

Steven Howson and John Pritchard were on the scoresheet for the Blues with trialists sealing the win.

 

Hamza Bencherif scored the only goal to earn York City victory against League One Bradford City.

 

The 6`3” centre-back grabbed the only goal of the game just past the hour-mark to cap a solid display by the Minstermen at Bootham Crescent.

 

League Two side Morecambe came from behind to beat Alfreton Town 3-2 at the Impact Arena.

 

Guiseley AFC ran out 3-0 winners at Toolstation Northern Counties East neighbours Yorkshire Amateur.

 

Goals from Reece Thompson, Rowan Liburd and Terry Kennedy give the Lions a convincing lead at the break.

 

Spennymoor Town were held to a 2-2 draw at Northern Premier League Scarborough Athletic.

 

Rob Ranshaw after 20 minutes and Glen Taylor on the half-hour mark gave Moors a 2-0 lead that Will Annan a minute into the second half and Michael Coulson on 62 minutes cancelled out.

 

A Lewis White header was all that separated League One Coventry City from Nuneaton Borough at Liberty Way.

 

Darlington played their first game in Europe for over 40 years when they took on PSV Eindhoven`s under-23s.

 

Dominic Collins headed the Quakers consolation in a 3-1 defeat against very impressive opponents.

 

Leamington shared a 1-1 draw with Championship side Derby County`s under-23s.

 

A 38th minute Matt Stenson penalty was the Brakes` scorer.

 

Bradford Park Avenue won the inaugural Donald Bell Trophy with an emphatic 15-0 win over the Yorkshire Regiment.

 

Nine of the goals were scored by unnamed trialists, with Gianluca Havern, Shane Killock, Oli Johnson, Bradley Oliver, Nicky Wroe and Ben McKenna also on target.

 

National League South….

 

Woking won 2-0 at Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Premier Division Spelthorne Sports.

 

After a goalless opening 45 minutes, a minute into the second half, Spelthorne gave away a free-kick in a dangerous area, and with a strong and decisive shot, Declan Appau sent it straight into the top corner of the goal.

 

In the 83rd minute Woking won another free-kick in a strong position, which was skilfully put away by Kofi Halliday.

 

Torquay United, who came down with the Cards, won 4-0 at Poole Town, relegated to the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division South.

 

George Essuman with two, Brett Williams and a trialist were the Gulls on target.

 

Newcomers Hereford FC won their third pre-season friendly with a 3-1 victory at Total Motion Midland League Premier Division Sporting Khalsa.

 

Lance Smith and Mike Symons scored the first two goals for Hereford, but Mykel Beckley pulled a goal back before the break.

 

As a quieter half followed, Harry White popped up with a goal just before the final whistle to restore the Bulls' two-goal lead.

 

Another newcomer, Slough Town, were beaten 3-2 at Arbour Park by Reading`s under-23s.

 

Harrison Gilkes and James Dobson scored the Rebels` goals.

 

Dartford showed their quality against a Sevenoaks Town side newly-promoted to the Bostik South East and were three goals up by the interval through Alfie Cue, Matt Carter and Delano Sam-Yorke.

 

Sevenoaks came into the game after the break and pulled one back through Chris Lavall but Darts added a fourth from Ronnie Vint and were good value for their victory.

 

Hampton & Richmond Borough fought back from conceding an early goal to claim victory at the Beveree against League One Oxford United.

 

Dejon Noel-Williams headed the visitors into a 3rd minute lead.

 

But Zack Joseph equalised midway through the first half and the Beavers grabbed the winner with a stylish header from Chris Dickson.

 

Earlier in the day, another Oxford United side hammered neighbours Oxford City 5-1.

 

Jon Obika and Armani Little with two goals, sandwiching Shandon Baptiste’s shot in a rapid three-goal burst in the second half for the U`s.

 

Kabongo Tshimanga’s penalty ensured the home side had something to cheer about.

 

Jack Compton came back to haunt League Two Newport County with a superb winner to condemn his former club to defeat at Hardenhuish Park against Chippenham Town.

 

League One Charlton Athletic won 2-1 at Welling United in front of 1,020 at Park View Road.

 

Adam Coombes put the Wings in front, but it was almost instantly cancelled out by Nicky Ajose and Lyle Taylor grabbed the winner.

 

Worrying result for Hungerford Town as they suffered a 6-0 hammering at Southern League Division One South Winchester City.

 

Rob Carr and Oli Bailey both bagged braces, with Ty Mitford and Lamar Koroma adding singles.

 

Goals from Jordan Parkes, Matt Saunders and an own goal helped Hemel Hempstead Town to a 3-1 win at Southern Premier Division South side Kings Langley.

 

Goals from Danny Green, Lee Minshull and Sam Blackman gave Concord Rangers a fine 3-1 win against League Two Colchester United.

 

Chelmsford City suffered a 4-1 defeat to League Two side Cambridge United.

 

The Clarets consolation came around the hour-mark as Rob Swaine volleyed home a poorly cleared corner.
