Play-off seeking Vanarama National League club Chesterfield have signed goalkeeper James Montgomery following his departure from National League North side Gateshead.

The 26-year-old joins the Spiteites on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

Montgomery re-joined Gateshead in October 2020 from AFC Fylde.

He had signed for the Coasters in July 2019 from SkyBet League Two side Forest Green Rovers, who he joined the previous summer from Gateshead.

He made 25 appearances for Rovers in all competitions, a number which would have been more if not for a freak injury that kept him sidelined.

Born in Sunderland, he started out at Middlesbrough and then Guiseley AFC before really making his name at AFC Telford United, before his switch to Gateshead in 2017.
