New Keeper for Martyrs
Pitching In Southern League Premier Division South club Merthyr Town have announced the signing of experienced goalkeeper Steve Cann from Cymru League South side Briton Ferry Llansawel.

The 33-year-old returns to the Martyrs where he had a brief spell at Penydarren Park during the 2018/19 season. 

 

Although he was born in South Africa, Cann is qualified for Wales and has represented his country at under-17, under-19 and semi-professional international level.

 

He started his career with Derby County but was released by the Rams in 2007 without managing to break into the first team squad.

 

He impressed then-Rotherham United boss Mark Robins in pre-season and was signed ahead of the 2007/08 season.

 

He played just a couple of senior games for the Millers and in 2009, headed to Wales to join Welsh Premier side Aberystwyth Town.

 

Since then, Cann has made over 250 appearances during with spells at Carmarthen Town, Port Talbot Town, Briton Ferry and Afan Lido, returning to Briton Ferry in the summer of 2020.

 

Manager Dean Clarke told https://www.merthyrtownfc.co.uk: “We’re really pleased. 

 

“Steve brings a wealth of experience which will only stand us in good stead come the start of this season. 

 

“He is a great goalkeeper and I'm delighted to get this deal over the line.

 

“He’s a really good character and an excellent lad in how he goes about his business”,
