The player looks set to be a replacement for Ollie Clark, who recently joined NPL Premier Division side Basford United.

Matthews, 21, played for Toolstation Northern Counties East League side AFC Mansfield before receiving an offer to play for NPL Premier Division outfit Gainsborough Trinity last season and had received approaches from other clubs while playing for Ollerton Town more recently.

He impressed joint managers Tommy Brookbanks and Mark Harvey during a behind closed door friendly, resulting in a 3-0 win for Carlton.

Matthews told the club's website: “I’m really excited to be coming on board, I’m ambitious and looking to challenge for promotion, no messing about, I aim to get straight down to business.

"I was impressed with Tommy and Mark and their drive and ambition and can’t wait to meet the lads and get stuck into pre-season training”.
