The 19-year-old, who can play in both defence and midfield, joins the Heed following an initial trial period on a two-year deal, with the option of a third year.

Wombwell arrives having made 15 appearances for Sunderland under-23s during the 2020/21 season – most recently appearing as a substitute in the Premier League 2 play-off final against Crystal Palace.

Wombwell first appeared for the Black Cats’ under-18 set-up in March 2019, making 25 appearances across two seasons before progressing to the club’s under-23 side.
