The 37-year-old has arrived from SkyBet League One side Doncaster Rovers, where he also enjoyed a spell as interim manager during the second half of the 2020/21 campaign following Darren Moore's departure to Sheffield Wednesday.

Doncaster-born Butler made more than 500 senior appearances during his time as a professional footballer.

He signed for the Rovers in January 2015 after making his loan move from Sheffield United permanent.

A former Scunthorpe United academy product, he made the grade at Glanford Park and would go on to make more than 150 appearances for the Iron.

From there, he moved to Huddersfield Town, Walsall and the Blades before heading back to his place of birth.

Butler has now committed his future to the Pilgrims having officially parted ways with Rovers on Friday.

"He was a League One player last season, playing a big part in Doncaster Rovers' season on and off the pitch. I am really looking forward to working with him this season".
