Now
35, Holmes returns to the game having been out of action since leaving SkyBet
League Two side Exeter City at the end of his contract in July 2020.
He
had made 114 appearances for the Grecians, which would have been considerably
more but for a bad ankle injury that sidelined him for the second half of the
2016/17 season.
He
came through the academy at Derby, going on to play 46 times for the senior
side, scoring 2 goals and also having loan spells with Swindon Town, Bradford
City and Walsall. He also won caps for England at under-16, 17 and under-19
level.
A
move to Southampton came in the summer of 2008 and he played 29 times for the
Saints, with loan stints back at Swindon and at Oxford United.
He
then joined Preston North End in May 2021 and added 60 games and 6 goals to his
League tally as well as more loan spells, this time at Portsmouth and Exeter,
where he moved to on a more permanent basis in May 2015. |
