The 33-year-old, a natural leader, had signed for the Minstermen in October 2016, initially on loan, from Wrexham.

Although arriving at the club as a left-back, the Liverpool-born man has played in a variety of positions including central midfield and wing-back.

He started his career with Chester City and has also played for Droylsden, Barrow, AFC Telford United, Stockport County and Lincoln City.

He made 159 appearances for City in a six-season tenure, first joining on loan from Wrexham in 2016 before signing permanently in 2017.

In his stint with the Minstermen, Newton won the clubman of the year award a record three times.

He has played 5 times for the England C team.
