The
23-year-old resumed his playing career after initially retiring in July 2020
due to a reoccurring injury and joined JD Cymru Premier side Barry Town United
which saw him feature for them during the 2020/21 season.
He
started his career as an academy product of Newport County, helping their under-18
side to success by scoring 28 goals in 32 appearances.
His
performances for The Exiles earned him a move to Bristol Rovers where he signed
a professional contract, playing for the Gas’s development side.
During
his time at the Memorial Ground, he spent time on loan in the Vanarama National
League South at Bath City, Gloucester City and Hungerford Town.
Merthyr
manager Paul Michael told his club’s website: “I’ve tracked Rhys’ progress for
many years from his time at Newport, moving on to getting a pro at Bristol
Rovers and then onto his time with Barry Town United.
“Rhys
has got everything in my opinion, he’s athletic, he can beat a player 1v1 on
the inside or the outside, receive the ball in tight areas, and he makes
excellent decisions in possession. He’s the type of player that will complement
the players already at the club and excite the fans.
“I’m
absolutely delighted to be able to bring him to Merthyr Town, pre-season games
can’t come quick enough so that everyone can see what he can do out there on
the pitch”.
