The 31-year-old midfielder joins Latics on a two-year deal, with the option of a third.

The younger brother of former Manchester United and England star Wayne, he is a midfielder who came through the youth system at the sadly now defunct Macclesfield Town and signed a contract making his debut in 2008.

He made 46 appearances for the Silkmen, scoring 4 times, before being released in 2010.

He played 7 games for New York Red Bulls in 2011, scoring once and 9 for Orlando City in 2012 scoring twice before signing for Barnsley in October of that year.

He did not make a senior appearance at Oakwell and in 2013 he joined Bury. He made 4 appearances for the Shakers without scoring and whilst at Gigg Lane had a 5-game loan spell with Chester in January 2014, scoring once.

That led to a permanent move to Chester at the end of that month and he went on to make a further 125 appearances for them, scoring 29 times before joining Wrexham in the summer of 2016.

He scored 11 times in 33 appearances for the Dragons before being loaned to Guiseley for the rest of the 2016/17 season in February 2017.

He scored once in 7 games for the Yorkshire club and then made his move to Nethermoor permanent in the summer of 2017 and scored 7 goals in 35 appearances for the Lions before joining National League club Barrow AFC in June 2018.

He helped the Bluebirds to win the National League title before switching to rivals Stockport County for an undisclosed fee in July 2020.

He returned to Barrow in January 2022.
