Bates (pictured), who came through the ranks at the Bescot Stadium after being released by Birmingham City as an apprentice, spent the 2022/23 campaign in Finland with Seinäjoen Jalkapallokerho. The 21-year-old moved to Seinäjoki last winter and went on to make 13 Veikkausliiga appearances, as well as two UEFA Europa Conference League matches. Brackley have also signed Sam Smart on loan from National League side FC Halifax Town until the end of the season. The 24-year-old joined the Shaymen in June 2022 from league rivals Eastleigh. He had joined the Spitfires in June 2019 from Southern Division One South side Basingstoke Town. He had trials at Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland during 2018/19, having played for Basingstoke for his entire career and previously worked under Eastleigh assistant-manager Jason Bristow when he was managing at the Camrose. During the 2017/18 season he scored 20 goals in 41 games and managed 2 goals in 11 appearances the following season.
