The 20-year-old full-back has been with the Tykes since 2017 and has progressed through their academy before signing a professional contract in June 2021. He is an energetic full-back and played a part in Barnsley’s first team during the pre-season fixtures ahead of the current campaign. The right-back also had a spell in Huddersfield Town’s youth set-up before moving to South Yorkshire. Hassan-Smith’s loan with the club runs until 23rd February 2023. The Lions have also confirmed the signing of Sam Nicholson, who has immediately joined Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division neighbours Thackley on a dual-registration. Nicholson played the second half of Tuesday night’s friendly win at Dennyfield in the centre of defence and is a product of Barnsley’s academy. The 20-year-old spent 11 years with the club before leaving at the end of the 2020/21 campaign and spending the past couple of years in America with Daytona State Falcons. At just 15 he made his under-23 debut for the Tykes at Oakwell in a 2-0 win over Bristol City.
