The 35-year-old hung up his boots in January 2021 after a second spell with League One Shrewsbury Town. Bacup-born, he began his career with Burnley but failed to make the senior side at Turf Moor, although he did make 7 appearances on loan to then-National League side Kidderminster Harriers in 2005 and 2006. He transferred to the sadly now defunct Bury in March 2006 and played 41 times, scoring 4 goals. He first joined Shrewsbury in May 2007 and played 44 times and scored another 4 times, as well as having loan spells with Luton Town and Hereford United. However, it was upon joining AFC Bournemouth in June 2010, who were newly promoted to League One, that his career really blossomed. He helped the Cherries march through League One, the Championship and into the Premier League for the first time, and made a total of 274 appearances and contributed 45 goals, plus a further 14 and 3 goals on loan at Hull City, before being released at the end of the 2018/19 season. In July 2019 he signed for Queens Park Rangers but his time at Loftus Road was affected by the Pandemic and he left in 2020 after playing 27 times, returning to Shrewsbury. Since retiring from professional football after a spell with Shrewsbury Town, Bacup-born Pugh has become a health coach, helping footballers with the nutrition side of the game with his Instagram page `The Foodie Footballer`. As part of his deal in signing for Clitheroe, his wages will be donated to a local charity on his behalf.
