The 54-year-old had been assistant boss at Port since October 2021. A striker in his playing days, McPhillips enjoyed a playing career that spanned ten years, turning out for the likes of Northampton Town, Crewe Alexandra and Barrow. McPhillips has had coaching roles at Crewe Alexandra and Blackburn Rovers, and he enjoyed a spell in charge of Blackpool’s first-team during the 2018/19 season, where he was assisted by Tony Grant for a short period, leading the Seasiders to a tenth-placed finish in League One. The duo also worked together at Indian side East Bengal under Robbie Fowler. It is a great opportunity for McPhillips to get back involved with the day-to-day business of a Football League club and Southport have wished him well in his new venture.
