Johnson leaves St James’ Park after seven months in charge, with the dismissal coming after an eight-game winless run. Club captain Gareth Dean has been appointed on an interim basis until the end of the season, of which four games remain in the regular campaign. Dean’s first game in charge will be against Hereford FC on Easter Monday. The Saints currently sit fourth in the table, 19 points behind leaders AFC Fylde. The team are also only three points clear of eighth-placed Gloucester City. Johnson had begun his tenure at the club with a 17-game unbeaten run, and despite a few stuttering results at the end of the run, had still seen Brackley challenging for the league’s only automatic promotion place. But an eight-game winless run saw the club lose touch with the teams at the top end, with a three-game winless run ultimately causing the end of Johnson’s reign. The former Premier League defender’s final game in charge came on Good Friday, when Brackley suffered a 2-1 home defeat against an AFC Telford United side now managed by Johnson’s predecessor Kevin Wilkin, who was dismissed to make way for Johnson in September. As well as Johnson, his backroom team of coaches Stephen Ward and Kevin Foley have also departed. In a brief statement, the club said: “The board of Brackley Town Football Club has announced that Roger Johnson has been released by mutual agreement from first-team duties with immediate effect. “The club wishes to place on record its appreciation for the hard work that Roger and his management team of Stephen Ward and Kevin Foley have put in this season. “Club captain Gareth Dean will take over first-team management responsibilities until the end of the season. “Further details will be announced in due course”.
