Lairds narrowly avoided finishing in the bottom three in the 2022/23 season and have been without a manager since the departure of Stuart Kier at the end of the season. Cass has most recently been plying his trade at Vauxhall Motors, having been manager of their reserve side. Prior to that he was manager at West Cheshire League side Heswall where in a successful period he led that club back to the first Division and subsequent consolidation prior to heading along the M53. Cass has a reputation locally for developing and showcasing local talent on the Wirral and it is this that brought him to the attention of the Cammell Laird committee. Speaking to the Cammell Laird 1907 website, Cass said: "I am delighted to be joining Lairds as manager of one of the Wirral’s proudest football clubs. I cannot wait to get going and meet the supporters, and am looking forward to getting this great club back on track.” Cass is to be assisted by Joe Sephton, a highly-respected figure in football on the Wirral, and first-team coach Jake Cripps.
