Blidworth Miners Welfare manager Lewis Saxby and assistant Dan Machin have succeeded Ben Marvin and his assistant Paul Rockley, who stepped down last week.

Chairman Les Lee paid tribute to Marvin and at the same time scotched rumours doing the rounds on social media that the club had gone behind Marvin's back in appointing the Blidworth duo while he was still in post.

"Ben tendered his resignation a couple of weeks ago following the defeat at Belper United, but at the same time he offered to stay on until his successor was appointed," the chairman told the club`s website. "And some of the social media posts which have appeared from people who were at best ill-informed and, at worst mischief making, have been well wide of the mark.

"Ben has acted throughout like the gentleman he is, and we are only sorry that things have not worked out for him as the committee had hoped. We thank him for his services so far this season and wish him every success wherever his future takes him."

The chairman also had a word of praise for Blidworth for the unselfish way in which they have facilitated the transfer of their management team to Rainworth.

Meanwhile, Marvin himself has issued the following statement: "It is with regret that I step down as manager.

"This is a decision I made in my mind in September and, after notifying the chairman of my intentions, I agreed to stay on until the club felt a suitable replacement was found.

"A change in my working circumstances has found me unable to commit to giving the manager's role the full attention it deserves.

"Results have been undeniably poor, but performances haven't been too far off and there is a core of good young local players in the squad. With some additions of experience in the right areas the club will find itself climbing the league in the very near future.

"Les has been a great chairman to work for and I wish him, the committee and the helpers at Rainworth all the very best for the future."

Saxby and assistant Dan Machin have made the short trip over from Central Midlands League neighbours Blidworth after guiding the club to the second round of this season's Buildbase FA Vase, beating higher grade clubs on the way.

And with the kind co-operation of their former club they have also brought in a number of players from the Blidworth squad in a bid to lift the Wrens clear of the relegation dogfight.

People may well wonder why the new boss chose to leave a club where he was enjoying notable success to join another club which has been in turmoil results wise.

Lewis, the son of former Wrens boss Gary Saxby, explained: "For me, other than Mansfield Town, Rainworth are the biggest club locally, and I say that in the knowledge of AFC Mansfield's rapid rise in recent seasons, because Rainworth are the club with the history, so I've always wanted to be involved here.

"Dad being manager some years ago may have played a part in that, but I want to be able to do an even better job than he did. Anyone who knows me knows that I am ambitious. I'm not one to just stand still, I want to try to climb as high as I can, and I see this as my next step up.

"I know the club has been in turmoil, but I would like to try to get up to mid-table which I believe is a realistic aim now for this season.

"Two wins would lift us out of the bottom four or five, and we have some decent fixtures coming up, so that's my immediate aim.

"West Bridgford on Saturday is a big one, it's a nice one to start with. They are down there with us at the moment, but having said that, it's too early at this stage of the season to be talking about six-pointers".
