Alresford Town in Desperate Need of Help
Keith Curtis, secretary/treasurer of Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Premier club Alresford Town, has issued a statement on the perilous position they now find themselves in.

When the season came to a halt, Alresford were sitting top of the table, four points clear of second-placed AFC Stoneham and nine points in front of the team in third, AFC Portchester.

“As we all know, COVID-19 brought about a premature end to the 2019/20 season.

“Many clubs throughout the country who had aspirations of promotion or cup glory, were left feeling frustrated at the inability to complete the season and see whether their finishing position in the league would match their ambition.

“That frustration was amplified by the decision reached by the National League System Committee that as far as Step 3-7 leagues were concerned the season would be declared null and void with all records expunged – in other words, the season never took place. No promotion – no relegation – no re-organisation of steps to create the perfect Pyramid.

“Despite objections, the NLS decision was ratified by the FA Council last week. It is uncertain whether there will be further objections but, although we were party to the initial objections, we have decided that it is extremely likely that the decision will withstand any legal challenges and, therefore, we have to, albeit with a great deal of reluctance, accept that we are where we are.

“The intention is that the constitution of the Steps 3-7 for next season will be as at the start of the 2019/20 season.

“The early cessation to the season has, however, given some of us at Alresford Town FC time to evaluate our appetite to `go again` next season. Our manager Richard Luffman resigned within a matter of days following the decision to null and void the season being made.

“Our chairman, Stuart Munro, has now given notice of his intention to leave the club after four seasons here during which time he has been instrumental in progressing the club from the brink of folding at the end of the 2015/16 season, to the brink of promotion in 2019/20.

“Utilising his contacts to obtain sponsorship deals and his continual optimism, support and enthusiasm has moved the club forward but he has decided that the time is right to step away.

“Regrettably, I am also relinquishing my role as secretary/treasurer so I can spend more valuable time with my grandchildren at weekends.

“Having been involved with Alresford Town since the start of the Millenium and, having just turned 70, I feel that it is time to devote more time to my family before it is too late.

“The above resignations cast doubts on the ability of the club to carry on next season unless there is anyone willing to step into the breach.

“The ground has an `F` grade and possesses some of the best facilities in the Wessex Premier.

“If there is anyone willing to step up to the plate and help carry the club forward, please email me (secretary.alresfordtownfc@gmail.com) in confidence so that meaningful discussion can take place as soon as possible”.
